The Feast of Saint Mark In Venice

The Feast of Saint Mark in Venice is a combination of two holidays. First, it's a death of Saint Mark on April 25. Second, it's a Liberation Day in Italy (commemorates the end of the fascist regime).

The Feast of Saint Mark

St. Mark was one of the pupils of Jesus Christ. He is also the author of the Goapel of Mark. He was considered to be a patron of the whole Italy and San Marco in particular. After his canonization, people erected a cathedral to honor the Saint. Now it bears his name: San Marco cathedral. It's believed to be the oldest and the most beautiful cathedral.

The Feast of Saint Mark is a bright event in the life of Italy. It's also called a day of lovers. The citizens of the city pay special attention to their other halves. The main event of the festival is men's parade on Piazza square. They are carrying pink roses in their hands and after the parade gift them to their beloved ones. The parade itself looks like a long pink rope of even a flower bed. Watching it from above is the most interesting position.

Liberation Day

The second event that's celebrated on April 25 is the end of the fascist regime. It's called Liberation Day. A huge parade with participation of military forces of the city and the whole country is held on this day. Veterans of war are the main heroes who are getting compliments and words of gratitude. However, April 25 isn't a real date of freedom.

On April 25, there started a movement for freedom in the occupied Italy. The opposition forces were able to make Benito Mussolini, the main fascist leader, flee the country. For the next two days Italians were fighting with the remaining fascists. Mussolini has been caught on April 27, and executed together with his adjutants on the following day. It might have been more historically accurate to celebrate this holiday on April 27 or 28, but Italians differ in their customs from other nations. They consider that freedom from fascism has started with freedom of the spirit. And the victory itself is merely an additional part of this free spirit.
