Mostly, because during spring local citizens celebrate a very important holiday - Rome Foundation Date. It's not a state holiday, and not even a day off, but people still making serious preparations and celebrate it loudly and funny.

The whole gladiator fighting was a part of memorial service. There were several obligations for the relatives of a dead person. If they didn't do any of them, a soul of this dead person started to haunt the living, coming to them and scaring.

Today, we see gladiator fights as a part of Roman culture. They are still held, although the conditions aren't that severe and strict, as it had been before our era. The equipment of gladiators are made from reliable and strong materials. At the beginning of the history it looked more like an a resemblance of protection, because the people who participated in fights weren't the most wealthy men in Rome and didn't have a possibility to buy an expensive equipment.
